Dr. Addelita Cancryn
1906 – 1999

On March 22. 1983, the Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands renamed the Wayne Aspinall Junior High School, to Addelita Cancryn Junior High School. The school had been named in 1965 for the U.S. Congressman who had been instrumental in the construction of the institution.

Dr. Addelita Cancryn, in whose honor the school was renamed, was born on the island of St. Thomas where she received her early education. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Education from Hampton Institute in Virginia. Dr. Cancryn had given 50 years of dedicated and distinguished service to the Virgin Islands community, particularly in the field of education. She was actively involved in church activities at All Saints Cathedral Church including teaching Sunday School and serving as director and organist of the senior choir of the church.

Dr. Cancryn, now deceased, authored the book Man of Vision, a biography of the late J. Antonio Jarvis. She was also a poet and journalist.

The Addelita Cancryn Junior High School caters to the educational needs of about 1000 students in the seventh and eighth grades each year. They are served by four administrators and about 120 faculty members and staff personnel.
